The MIRI Difference Featured on Good Day Houston
Houstonites were treated to expert advice on women’s health last week. Dr. Robert K. Zurawin of MIRI Women’s Health visited the set of Great Day Houston to share the latest research in hysterectomies, focusing on one central point – it doesn’t have to be like your mother’s hysterectomy.
Dr. Zurawin revealed that hysterectomies were the most common surgery for women aside from cesarean sections, with over 600,000 performed each year. He notes, however, that many of these surgeries are unnecessary. It’s all about getting the right diagnosis and getting all the options (in today’s world, it can be everything from hormone therapy to a partial hysterectomy).
He went on to explain that the average OB-GYN performs 10 hysterectomies each year. Dr. Zurawin compares this to a pilot flying a plane only 10 times each year. What’s more, many doctors still perform hysterectomies in which they make a large incision across the abdomen.
At centers such as MIRI, doctors have a wealth of experience performing hysterectomies, fibroid removal, and other surgeries, and use the latest technology and minimally invasive practices. He explains that with a laparoscopy, doctors can perform a hysterectomy or other procedures by making only one or a few incisions (in his words, “as big as a fingernail”) near the belly button.
With these minimally invasive techniques, he has seen many women return to work within 10 days or less. Other benefits of having a minimally invasive procedure is that they are often less expensive, there is a lower risk of complications, and many surgeries are outpatient, meaning you can heal in your own home.
If you are interested in having a hysterectomy procedure, Dr. Zurawin recommends asking your doctor the following questions: 1) Do you perform minimally invasive procedures? 2) What is your experience and what outcomes have you had with hysterectomies? 3) How often do you perform this kind of surgery?
